Former UCD President, Prof. Hugh Brady, is to become the 17th President of Imperial College London, following a global search. He will take up his new post in 2022.
Prof Brady – who is the first doctor to be appointed to the post – has been Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol since 2015 and was the eighth President of University College, Dublin from 2004 – 2013.
A graduate of UCD, he holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in pharmacology, a Ph.D. in renal physiology and an M.D. for research in molecular medicine. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the Queen’s University Belfast, an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Anaesthetists in Ireland and the Robert Menzies Medal from the University of Melbourne.
Prof. Brady has worked in the University of Toronto, as Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard, as Consultant Physician at the Mater Hospital, Dublin and as Professor of Medicine & Therapeutics at UCD. He is an international authority on the pathogenesis of renal inflammation and diabetic kidney disease.
He is married to Professor Yvonne O’Meara, Consultant Nephrologist at the Mater Hospital, Dublin and Professor of Medicine & Therapeutics in UCD.
