Breda Crehan–Roche, President of HMI

I am honoured to be the new President of the HMI and would like to thank my colleagues for their confidence in electing me

I would also like thank my predecessor, Tony Canavan and the outgoing Council for their hard work and the leadership they have given us all over the last three years. Under the guidance of Tony and the Council, HMI has increased its membership and influence and I plan to build on this.

I strongly believe that HMI is uniquely placed to create an important network for Health and Social Care Managers from all sectors to come together, to develop standards of management, competence and practice and to support each other in our work and during my term of office I will work with Council Honorary Officers, Sharon Morrow, Vice President, Theresa Heller, Honorary Secretary, Ger O’Callaghan, Honorary Treasurer and HMI Council Members to develop this.

Health and social care provision in Ireland represent a broad church made up of Public, Private, Non-Statutory and Voluntary providers. As President, I am committed to the consolidation of networks and the provision of solid sounding boards to support health and social care managers in their pursuit of continuous professional development through synergies and reciprocal learning opportunities across Ireland and through the European Association of Healthcare Managers.

Membership of HMI is a very valuable resource for organisations and managers.  Its benefits include our Regional Webinars, our online Journal, Health Manager, The Learning Rooms, our annual HMI Conference and an unparalleled opportunity for networking with colleagues and drawing support from their experience.

HMI Regional Webinars provide Members with the latest information on planned and new developments within the health and social care services and the thinking behind these.

Health Manager, our informative, online journal, which is published every three months, brings us news of new policies, plans, appointments and developments in the health and social care services, reports on what is happening around the country and abroad and features opinion articles from leading professionals and academics.

The Learning Rooms brings unique and specialised skills and imagination to eLearning projects, shaped by our commitment to quality and love of technology and learning. Quality assured by Quality & Qualifications Ireland (QQI) since 2008.

The Annual HMI Conference, provides an opportunity for Members to look at the strategic direction in which our health and social care services are travelling, the challenges of new ways of delivering health and social care and the ways in which these can be met.

This year the HMI Conference takes place on October 23, in the Concert Hall, RDS, Dublin. The Theme is “Positively Leading Through Complex Change In Health And Social Care.”

In an ever changing, fast paced and complex environment, major change has occurred over the past 12 months, with the establishment of the six new HSE Regional Health Areas (RHAs) and changes at a national level within the public health system. This year’s Conference, will look at leading complex change with a focus on leadership.

As President of HMI I look forward to introducing an exceptional line up of expert speakers on the day, who will lead the discussion and debate. The Theme of the Conference is the enhancement of knowledge and learning for members and delegates, through the sharing of lessons from successful implementation of projects and research. Attending the Conference will provide developmental and networking opportunities for managers to meet and engage with colleagues from different sectors in Ireland and abroad and I will look forward to seeing as many as possible of you there on the day.
