A special initiative to make the experience of hospital more comfortable, safer and suited to the needs of patients living with dementia, has been introduced in St Anne’s ward at the Mater Hospital Dublin.

The ward cares for elderly patients, many of whom have dementia-related conditions and for whom hospital can be a disorientating and distressing environment.

It now provides a dementia friendly sitting room to evoke feelings of familiarity and home, colour coded corridors to help patients find their own room, a piano and a “Clery’s clock.”  The famous meeting point for many first dates in the days before mobile phones, stimulates happy memories for patients.

The initiative was the work of The Mater Foundation.
