The Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin has won a Golden Pedal Award for its success in advocating cycling as a means of commuting to work.
The award, which honours organisations that have worked the hardest to promote cycling to work in the past year, was presented to Temple Street by the Dublin Cycling Campaign, as part of National Bike Week.
Supported by Dublin City Council, Chambers Ireland and the Smarter Travel unit of the Department of Transport, the competition received a large number of entries from a range of private and semi-state organisations throughout the greater Dublin area.
Temple Street Hospital was commended for its consistent year-long promotion of cycling and its innovative initiatives to encourage and facilitate new cyclists. Since 2002, the hospital has seen a 450 per cent growth in the number of people cycling to work, with over 16 per cent of staff having availed of the Cycle to Work Scheme. All this has resulted in a 44 per cent reduction in the number of staff driving to the hospital.
Padraig Ryan, Transport Manager at Temple Street, commented, “It’s great that staff cycling to the hospital have been recognised for the efforts that they make. We have been embedding a culture of sustainable transport at Temple Street for a number of years now and staff have really engaged positively with us.”
The Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation delivering high quality patient care to children and their families.
