The inaugural Clinical Director Executive Skills programme which was officially launched on the November 29, 2017 finished the last module on April 27, 2018.

The programme was the first of its kind in Ireland, and its objective was to help Clinical Directors and Consultants to further develop clinical leadership and management skills which will promote improved services and better patient outcomes.

The CD Executive skills programme was co-designed by the Clinical Director Programme and the RCSI Institute of Leadership and funded by the Quality Improvement Division of the HSE under the direction of Dr Philip Crowley, Dr Julie McCarthy and Angela Hughes who were instrumental in bringing this initiative to fruition, following feedback from clinical directors working front line.

The programme was available to clinical director leaders from across health in line with the health system reform agenda and the recommendations of the Joint Oireachtas Report on future Health.

The programme was run over nine days in three module block.  It was highly participative with input from HSE Executive Leaders/subject matter experts in their fields and external thought leaders.   A range of learning approaches ensure that participants were fully engaged.  Each consultant was also part of a facilitated Executive Challenge learning set  and developed strong networks as a result of the programme interaction.

Executive Coaching was offered to all and is being given to some participants by Caroline O’Regan,  to enhance their personal development and build resilience in these demanding clinical leadership roles.  These networks and supports will continue long after the formal programme finishes.

Feedback from the programme validated that this approach to learning and development was exactly what the doctor ordered.
