A total of 280 organ transplants were carried out in Ireland last year.
This marks the second highest yearly performance achieved, with an average rate of 23 transplants per month.
There were 172 kidney transplants carried out at the National Renal Transplant service in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.
Fifty eight liver transplants were carried out at the National Liver transplant service at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin.
Thirty five lung transplants and 15 heart transplants were carried out at the National Heart Lung Transplant service at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin.
The HSE Organ Donation and Transplant Ireland (ODTI), which is headed by Director, Prof. Jim Egan, was established to provide governance, integration and leadership for organ donation and transplantation in Ireland.
There are three transplant centres in Ireland, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, St. Vincent’s University Hospital and Beaumont Hospital.
In addition to carrying out liver transplants, St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin re-commences pancreatic transplants this year when suitable donor/recipient matches occur.
