After five years of fundraising, the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Cappagh has installed and commissioned Ireland’s first dedicated orthopaedic CT scanner in a public hospital.

This CT scanner generates images using an ultra-fast rotating
x-ray source and an array of digital detectors to generate high-resolution multiplanar images. It will facilitate interventions such as musculoskeletal tumour biopsies and ablations and guided minimally invasive spinal procedures. It will also enable diagnostic tumour staging, coronary and pulmonary CT angiography, and modular prosthesis design, aided by metal artefact reduction software.

The deployment of the new CT scanner supports the already in situ 3T MRI and upgraded 1.5T MRI as part of the OSIC Unit (Orthopaedic & Sports Imaging Centre) at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh.
