In November, Tallaght University Hospital went through a major  ICT change, when it introduced Synergy Evolve,  the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) that will provide one window gradually connecting to all of the Hospital’s systems.

Dr. Jason Carty, Consultant in Emergency Medicine/Chief Clinical Information Officer, said  it would be an integral part of the care they delivered to patients for years to come.

“The second part of this change has been the introduction of ICE, a new ordering system which replaces , the previous system. Not only will ICE manage the ordering of blood tests, completely changing how TUH’s phlebotomy service works, it will also change orders and results that have previously been traditionally paper-based, with services like urodynamics going live on ICE.

“These changes are just Phase I of this new EPR, a first step to move our clinical work into this new digital realm. It gives us the opportunity to improve the care that we deliver, and reduce the administrative burden that care professionals have to deal with, and giving that time back to patients.

A huge team of people have made this happen but a particular spotlight is due to David Wall, Chief Information Officer and Ciara Blair, EPR Programme Manager.

For the next phases of Project Synergy in 2022 and beyond, the plan is to digitise note taking and workflow across inpatient and outpatient services and bring them into Synergy Evolve. Also, we want these systems to become accessible to primary care colleagues and eventually, patients themselves. As Tallaght University Hospital’s first  Chief Clinical Information Officer, it has been a thrill for me to be part of this process so far, and I look forward to the ideas and improvements that lie ahead.”
