
The Medical Council has appointed Dr Maria O’Kane as its new CEO, following a competitive recruitment process.
Dr O’Kane replaces Mr Leo Kearns, who finished his time as CEO with the Medical Council in September.
Dr Suzanne Crowe, President of the Medical Councilsaid, “Maria brings over three decades experience of leadership at various levels of the health sector in Northern Ireland.
Until earlier this year Dr O’Kane was Chief Executive Officer of the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland, responsible for the effective running of an integrated health and social care organisation serving 390,000 people, which represents 20% of Northern Ireland’s population.
With over 30 years’ experience working in healthcare leadership, she has held senior leadership roles in the British Medical Association (BMA), the Royal College of Psychiatrists and more recently the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland.
