In my role as Clinical Director Programme Manager, I am privileged to sign the compassionate pledge and demonstrate my commitment to this leadership approach., writes Angela Hughes, Programme Manager, Clinical Directors Programme

Dr. Ethel Ryan and I oversee the Executive Clinical Directors Programme, which includes nine sessions designed to support the Clinical Director Forum. The programme serves a dual purpose: it helps Clinical Directors navigate the complexities of their roles and also supports the new clinical leadership structures outlined in the HSE’s reform contract. The programme provides a safe, peer-to-peer space where senior clinical leaders can share challenges, engage with senior HSE leaders, meet with international thought leaders, and enhance their management skills, particularly in areas such as human resources and finance.
One of the key strengths of compassionate leadership is its ability to articulate what has often been a difficult concept to define. It provides a practical framework, with tools and techniques that allow healthcare leaders to integrate compassionate practices into their everyday work. This makes it easier to communicate the value of compassion in healthcare and, more importantly, to demonstrate its profound impact on both staff wellbeing and patient care. We are thrilled to see that compassionate cultures are gaining significant traction within Irish healthcare. We are witnessing a shift toward more empathetic and human-centered leadership, and we are excited to see where this momentum will take us. As we continue to embrace these principles, we are confident that Ireland will lead the way in developing compassionate leadership in healthcare, setting an example for others to follow.
