Health Minister, Jennifer Carroll McNeill has officially opened the South Dublin Surgical Hub, which is a partnership between St James’s Hospital Dublin and the Health Service Executive supported by the Department of Health.
Aimed at improving the waiting times for surgery for patients, it is based on the site of the former Mount Carmel Hospital, which is now owned by the HSE.
The aim is to treat 10,000-day cases and minor surgeries a year, relieving pressures on other hospitals in the city, particularly St. James’s Hospital, St Vincent’s and Tallaght University Hospital.
This is the second surgical hub after Tallaght University Hospital Mr Damien McCallion, HSE Deputy CEO said surgical hubs shortened waiting lists by separating surgery from emergency care and would operate over 6 days 8am to 8pm when at full capacity. They will deliver 10,000 day case procedures annually.
“This is real transformation with more surgical hubs being delivered through 2025 and 2026 as part of the national elective care programme. All possible through Sláintecare,” he said.
