Louth County Hospital, the Rotunda Hospital, Monaghan Hospital and Connolly Hospital have received four bursary awards for the National HSE Tobacco Free Campus. Each of the entrees were judged on Sustainability, Innovation, and Monitoring & Compliance.
Over 4,500 deaths in Ireland are directly associated with tobacco consumption and from a healthcare perspective tobacco related admission account for 45,000 bed days used ,costing the HSE over €460 million per year.
Since the launch of the Tobacco Free Campus Policy in 2012, there has been significant commitment by HSE staff and management in supporting its implementation. The policy is based on international best practice and is in line with the GNTH Global Network of Tobacco Free Health Services Model
