Eamonn Fitzgerald has been elected as President of The European Hospital and Healthcare Federation

Eamonn, who was previously HOPE Vice-President, is Managing Director UPMC Ireland/ SVP UPMC International.

He is a Board Member of the Health Management Institute of Ireland (HMI) as well as holding adjunct faculty at the RCSI, Institute of Leadership. Eamonn follows in the footsteps of Denis Doherty, former HMI President and columnist with Health Manager, who was the first Irish President of HOPE.

Eamonn was elected President at the HOPE AGORA Conference in Belgium, where 28 countries were represented. Gerry O’Dwyer, HMI Council Member and former President of EAHM said he would like to congratulate Eamonn on his election. “It is a fantastic honour for the country,” he said.

The European Hospital and Healthcare Federation, is a European non-profit organisation, created in 1966 representing national public and private hospital and healthcare associations and hospital, health and social care services owners. With 36 organisations from the 27 Member States of the European Union, the United-Kingdom, Switzerland and the Republic of Serbia, HOPE covers almost 80% of hospital care and is also active in the healthcare and social fields.

HOPE mission is to promote improvements in the health of citizens and a uniformly high standard of hospital care by the European Union, fostering efficiency, effectiveness and humanity in the organisation and operations of hospital and health services.

HOPE is representing its members in the European arena covering all policies with an impact on hospitals and health services. HOPE contributes to the legislative agenda but also to the non-legislative activities, in particular through participation in European projects and joint actions.

Since its creation HOPE has produced comparative information on the ways healthcare systems are organised and financed. It includes as well a unique annual exchange programme for health professionals, together with study tours, workshops and conferences.E isringis fostering efficiency, effectiveness and humanity in the and operation of hospital aalthcare services. Two major goals have since its creation: to develop and maintain information and goals have been set up in HOPE since its creation: to develop and maintain information and to advise members.

Eamonn Fitzgerald joined UPMC Ireland in March 2021 and was appointed Managing Director in June of 2022. Eamonn leads a team of highly committed and skilled colleagues in the delivery of UPMC’s mission of Life Changing Medicine as well as optimization and growth of operating margin to ensure commercial sustainability and ROI for further growth and development. 

He spent 14 years as Chief Executive of the Hermitage Medical Clinic (hermitageclinic.ie), a hi – tech acute hospital located in West Dublin that offers a broad spectrum of specialised medical and surgical care programs and where he oversaw four successful triennial JCI accreditations of the hospital. (JCI). Subsequent, to his role at the Hermitage Medical Clinic, Eamonn served as Executive Director of the Cancer, Ortho/Spine and Ophthalmology Centers at the Mater Private Network.

He has a career in Health Care spanning 30 years. Prior to being the founding CEO of the Hermitage Medical Clinic, he held the position of Group Deputy Chief Executive of St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group (www.svhg.ie) between 1996 – 2006 and previously for seven years as an Allied Health Professional within the National Neurosciences Centre at Beaumont Hospital.

Eamonn holds a primary degree in Social Science / Social Work (UCC) a Diploma in Montessori Education (St Nicholas,London), Masters in Business Studies (UCD) and MSc in Economics (Trinity).

He is married to Barbara and has teenage sons.
