The new 150-bed €213 million Bon Secours Hospital in Ballysimon, Limerick – the first new acute hospital built in Ireland in nearly two decades – is designed to transform the way care is delivered for patients and families across the Mid-West.
In what the Bon Secours Health System hailed as “a historic milestone for the Group and for healthcare in Ireland”, the first patients were admitted to the hospital in September.
“This new state-of-the-art hospital will provide advanced medical and surgical care in addition to a Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), 25 single room Medical Ward, Specialist Ophthalmology Department, and Interventional Cardiovascular Lab,” said a hospital spokesperson.
“The opportunity to build a new hospital on a greenfield site has afforded us the opportunity to put sustainability at the heart of all considerations when it came to the construction of the building.”
The new Hospital provides 99 inpatient beds (all single en-suite rooms), 4 bed Special Observation Unit, 26 Endoscopy Recovery Bays & 3 Procedure Rooms, 6 bed Ophthalmology unit with Ophthalmology theatre, 27 bed Surgical Unit, 20 bay Day Procedures Unit with 3 Procedure Rooms, 1 Cath Lab & 8 Interventional Cardiology Recovery Bays and 4 Operating Theatres, 10 Bay Hospital Assessment Unit
The hospital represents one of the largest healthcare investments ever made in the region, expanding the group’s reach and underscoring its ongoing investment in Irish healthcare infrastructure.
The phased opening began with the relocation of some services from Barrington’s Hospital at George’s Quay, Limerick, and the launch of the new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, the first such private facility in the Mid-West.
Further services including surgery and related specialties were then transitioned from Barrington’s, with additional specialties such as cardiology, neurology, respiratory medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology and advanced diagnostic imaging following.
Alongside the hospital, the new Clinical Services Hub is aimed at further strengthening patient care and outpatient diagnostics, providing cardiology, vascular and neurology diagnostics, along with a cutting-edge outpatient imaging centre, in partnership with Alliance Medical. This includes the first PET-CT scanner in the Mid-West.
A spokesperson said the hospital was built to the highest technical, accessibility and sustainability standards. Employment in the new hospital has doubled following a wide-ranging international recruitment programme.
Alan Sharp, Group CEO, Bon Secours Health System, said, “The opening of Bon Secours Hospital Limerick marks yet another proud milestone for our organisation and for healthcare in Ireland. This €213 million investment reflects our long-term commitment to expand access to high-quality care, supporting medical innovation and creating meaningful employment opportunities in the Mid-West.”
Jason Kenny, CEO of Bon Secours Hospital Limerick, added, “This is a historic time for Limerick and the Mid-West as we welcome our very first patients to this world-class facility. From day one, patients are benefitting from access to cutting-edge technology and expert care.”
