This pledge, developed by NHS Wales and Professor Michael West, is more than a statement, it’s a movement to embed compassion into the very fabric of healthcare leadership and culture.

At LauraLynn, Ireland’s only children’s hospice, compassion is not just a value—it’s a way of life. By signing the Compassionate Leadership Pledge, LauraLynn joins a growing network of Irish organisations, including the HSE, in shaping a more inclusive, empathetic, and resilient health service

The pledge invites individuals, teams, and organisations to commit to three key actions: developing and modelling compassionate leadership, creating collective cultures of care, and embedding the principles of compassion into everyday practice. These principles—awareness of others’ needs, active listening, respect, and collaborative action—align seamlessly with LauraLynn’s hugely cherished core values of compassion, collaboration, and excellence.

Compassion is the heartbeat of LauraLynn’s care. It’s a sensitivity to suffering, paired with a commitment to provide support to help alleviate it. Research highlighted in the HMI Health Manager Journal shows that compassionate leadership leads to better care outcomes and improved staff retention.  At LauraLynn, this translates into a culture where every interaction—whether with a child, a family member, or a colleague—is grounded in empathy and kindness.

Collaboration is equally vital. LauraLynn has worked closely with the RCSI to implement a customised compassionate leadership programme across the organisation. This initiative fosters psychological safety, emotional intelligence, and inclusive decision-making—hallmarks of compassionate leadership.

Finally, excellence is achieved not only through the quality of care we provide, but through the quality of relationships and the emotional climate of care. LauraLynn’s commitment to excellence is reflected in its leadership practices, its dedication to continuous learning, and its unwavering focus on person-centred care.

Looking ahead, LauraLynn’s pledge is more than symbolic—it’s a strategic step towards a culture that listens actively, acts justly, and cares deeply. By embedding compassion into leadership, LauraLynn is not only enhancing its own culture but contributing to a national and global movement to rehumanise healthcare.

In the words of Caroline O’Regan, Executive Development Specialist at RCSI, “Compassion is not an optional extra—it’s a foundational learning outcome for all health professionals.” At LauraLynn, it’s also a promise: to lead with heart, collaborate with purpose, and strive for excellence in every moment of care.
