As 2025 draws to a close, I am pleased to reflect on a year of bold leadership, strategic clarity, and renewed purpose for the Health Management Institute of Ireland. As I reflect on a significant year for the Health Management Institute of Ireland, I am filled with pride and optimism for the future of our profession.
The 2025 HMI Annual Conference, themed “Leading and Managing Health and Social Care in a VUCA World”, was a resounding success. It brought together a dynamic community of health and social care leaders, policy influencers, and innovators who are shaping the future of health and social care services in Ireland and beyond. Our conference speakers inspired and challenged us to think differently. From thought-provoking keynotes on system transformation and digital health, to powerful panel discussions on collaborative and compassionate leadership, the event was a testament to the strength and diversity of our sector. The energy in the room was palpable, and the conversations sparked will undoubtedly continue to influence our work in the months ahead.
Strategic Momentum: Listening, Learning, Leading
Beyond the conference, 2025 was a year of strategic listening. This year also marked significant milestones. The first was the HMI Inaugural Members-Only Workshop held in September. This event was more than a gathering, it was a listening exercise, a strategic dialogue, and a commitment to co-creating the future of HMI with our members at the centre.
Together with the Strategic Planning Workshop in November, these events will be foundational in shaping our future direction.
Empowering Leaders/ Managers for a Global Health and Social Care Future
Professional Development & Career Progression: Building on the success of the current HMI Management Essentials Programme, we will expand our CPD offerings to reflect the evolving needs of health and social care leaders. This will include, micro-learning modules for rapid, accessible skill-building, mentorship and reverse mentoring to foster intergenerational learning and leadership agility and career transition support for emerging leaders navigating new roles and responsibilities.
Networking & Member Engagement: We will reinvigorate our engagement platforms to foster meaningful connections and leadership development. This includes, regional seminars, fireside conversations, and masterclasses, in-person webinars and networking events that promote cross-sector collaboration and peer support.
Knowledge Sharing & Peer Learning: We will create dynamic platforms for facilitated, peer-led problem-solving and shared learning fora, including, case study exchanges and peer-assisted learning sessions. Evidence from WHO and global meta-analyses confirms that peer-assisted learning (PAL) enhances leadership behaviours, confidence, and workplace engagement across health and social care professions.
System Challenges & Innovation: HMI will continue to spotlight innovation in: virtual health and telemedicine, chronic disease management, integrated health and social care and digital transformation technologies. These themes will be featured prominently on our website and in the HMI Journal.
Leadership & Diversity: We will champion inclusive, contemporary leadership models that reflect global challenges and collective thinking. Our focus includes generational diversity and evolving leadership styles, culturally responsive leadership and equity-driven workforce planning.
Looking Ahead: A New Era for HMI: As we step into 2026, we do so with immense pride and a renewed sense of purpose and eyes firmly fixed on the future.
