University Hospital Limerick has marked the first year of its Virtual Ward.
On July 1, 2024, the Virtual Ward at UHL was launched and it has proved to be a pioneering initiative that’s transformed how hospital-level care is delivered in the Mid West.
One year on, over 567 patients have been safely supported at home, avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions while still receiving expert, around the clock care.
“The Virtual Ward is a safe, efficient alternative to hospital stays, allowing suitable patients to be monitored and treated from home using digital technology. Patients referred from our ED, Acute Medical Assessment Unit, or medical wards receive a full technology kit, including a tablet and diagnostic equipment, which connects them to a central clinical hub in UHL for 24/7 monitoring and support,” said a spokesperson for HSE Mid West.
Jesna Jose, Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM2) on the Virtual Ward, said, “Patients are telling us that they much prefer being treated in the comfort of their own homes rather than spending days in the hospital, and that they feel not only supported, but also better able to manage their conditions at home.”
