Minister for Health Dr Jennifer Carroll MacNeill joined patients and staff at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire recently as they celebrated the success of Phase One of the world class major redevelopment project on the NRH campus.

The multi award-winning rehabilitation hospital is a country-first, purpose-designed to accommodate the needs of patients requiring complex specialist rehabilitation services. The building was completed and opened on time and within budget. The move to the new hospital was a momentous occasion for patients and for staff who had worked so assiduously to accomplish the completion of Phase 1 of this national capital project, but were unable to celebrate the opening due to the stark difficulties of COVID at the time.
Many retired and former staff who were engaged for many years in the planning and design phases for Phase One of the redevelopment returned to celebrate with current staff and patients on the 5th anniversary of the move from the original hospital to the new world class rehabilitation hospital.

NRH Chairman, Mr Kieran Fleck expressed his gratitude to the Government and the HSE for their continued support for the development of this Hospital. He said, “We warmly welcome Minister Carroll MacNeill and our local public representatives here today to celebrate the success of Phase One of the NRH redevelopment. We greatly appreciate your support on this life enhancing journey.
“We, together with our patients, have commenced our mountainous climb and look with hope and confidence to reaching our summit and the full delivery of rehabilitation services for those who need them. Not only on a national but an all-island basis.”
Minister Carroll MacNeill viewed the plans for the remaining redevelopment of the NRH site and acknowledged the work that resulted in getting the National Rehabilitation Hospital open on budget and on time. She noted that the NRH is one of the first hospitals in the country to have implemented the Electronic Health Record in partnership with the HSE. The Minister also said it was a pleasure to see such strong public representation here because they were 100% behind this hospital and its development.
