I have been actively involved with the Five Nations, a collective leadership community of practice across Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales, since its inception in 2018. In parallel, I serve as the HSE Lead in the Global Compassionate Coalition, a role I have held since the coalition was founded, following my earlier participation in the Former Five Nations initiative that began in December 2018.

The Global Compassionate Coalition provides an international platform to exchange evidence, insights, and best practices on fostering compassionate cultures and leadership. These practices have been shown to enhance staff engagement and, ultimately, lead to better clinical outcomes for patients. Through my contributions, I have helped shape and champion this dialogue, ensuring that compassion remains at the core of leadership development in healthcare.

I believe that strong and sustainable relationships are built on trust, psychological safety, and the courage to embrace constructive disagreement. These values underpin my leadership approach and are central to the work of both the Five Nations and the Global Compassionate Coalition.

In my role, I have consistently advocated for and adopted compassionate leadership as the foundation of all our clinical leadership programmes. By embedding compassion into leadership structures, we not only nurture supportive environments for staff but also create the conditions where high-quality, patient-centred care can thrive.
